Claudia Gadinger, City of Pembroke recreation programmer, said in addition to exercise, fun, competition and celebrating the city’s hockey heritage, the tournament also benefits a good local cause.

We are pleased to announce that all proceeds from the tournament will go to BGC Pembroke to support local youth sports initiatives,” Gadinger said in a press release. “Jim served on the board of the Boys and Girls Club of Pembroke for years and always had a passion for local sports and the development of youth in athletics.”

To register, a team’s captain/parent will need to sign up or sign in on the online booking system as an individual and then enroll under the activities tab in the proper division (16+ division, 13-15 division and 7 to 12 years division). Parents must ensure their child is part of their household on their online profile to enroll them in the activity. Once enrolled and paid, recreation staff will reach out to the team captains to collect information. Registration is also available in person at the Parks and Recreation Office.

The tournament is named in honour of Jim Sloan whose impact on the community cannot be overstated. He was instrumental in the establishment of Bogie’s Bar at the Pembroke Memorial Centre, served on numerous committees, helped to organize many community functions and causes, and when he wasn’t volunteering, he served a long tenure with the Pembroke Police. Jim always wanted to recognize the work of others but never sought recognition himself. After a lengthy illness, Jim passed away in 2018 and left behind a remarkable legacy. There is no one more fitting to be the namesake of this tournament, the press release concluded.
